Spellexi is built by a homeschool parent for homeschool parents. We take your privacy, and especially your child's privacy, seriously. This policy covers both this marketing website (spellexi.com) and the Spellexi iOS app.
What we collect on this website
On this marketing website, the only personal information we collect is your email address (and optionally your first name), and only if you voluntarily sign up through the Feedback Families form. We use MailerLite to manage that list and send the welcome and update emails that follow. We use your email to contact you about your Feedback Families application or significant Spellexi updates. Nothing else.
We do not use tracking pixels, behavioral advertising, or third-party analytics on this site.
What the Spellexi app collects
When you create a Spellexi account in the iOS app, we collect:
- Your email address, used to sign you in and to send transactional emails such as the optional practice-reminder email after a spelling session.
- Your name and your child's first name, used to personalize the in-app experience and the words we read aloud. We do not collect your child's last name, address, phone number, or any other contact information about your child.
- Photos of your child's handwritten spelling practice, which you take and submit yourself. These photos are used to grade the words your child wrote and to track which words they have mastered over time.
- Spelling session results: which words were practiced, which were correct, and which were missed. This drives the spaced-repetition word selection that makes practice stick.
- Subscription status: whether you are on a monthly or annual subscription, and whether you are in a free trial. Apple processes all payments. We never see or store your credit card information.
- Diagnostic data: crash reports and basic performance data, used to find and fix bugs. This includes a device identifier so we can group crashes from the same device, your iOS version, and your app version.
- Customer feedback you send through the in-app "Send Feedback" form, which comes directly to our inbox.
How we use the information from the app
- To grade your child's handwritten spelling practice and show you the results.
- To select which words to bring back in future sessions, based on what your child has mastered and what is still slipping.
- To send you the optional practice-reminder email (you can turn this off in Settings).
- To process your subscription and unlock paid features.
- To diagnose and fix bugs and crashes.
- To respond to your feedback when you write to us.
We do not sell, rent, or share your data, your child's data, or any handwriting photos with third parties for advertising or marketing purposes. Ever.
Third-party services we use
The Spellexi app and website rely on the following service providers. Each one processes the minimum data needed to perform its function, and each has its own privacy policy that applies to information processed through their platform.
- Apple In-App Purchase: handles all subscription payments. Apple, not Spellexi, processes your payment information.
- Supabase: hosts our database and stores your account, your child's profile, session results, and handwriting photos. Data is stored in encrypted form on Supabase's servers in the United States.
- Anthropic (Claude API): used to grade handwritten spelling photos and to generate the short teaching tips after a missed word. The photo and the relevant context for that session are sent to Anthropic's API. Anthropic does not use this data to train its models.
- OpenAI: used in limited cases to generate spelling word lists and example sentences. Your child's data is not sent to OpenAI; only the abstract word being processed.
- Sentry: receives crash reports and performance diagnostics so we can find and fix bugs. Crash reports include device model, iOS version, and app version, plus the code path that crashed.
- Resend: sends transactional emails from Spellexi to your inbox, such as the practice-reminder email.
- MailerLite (website only): manages our email list and sends the welcome and follow-up emails after you sign up through the Feedback Families form. Only used for the website signup form, not the in-app experience.
- Cloudflare: provides hosting and CDN services for the marketing website. Cloudflare may process request logs including IP addresses as part of normal network operation.
Children's privacy (COPPA)
Spellexi is designed for parents to use on behalf of their children. We are committed to complying with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
- The parent creates the account. Children do not create their own accounts or have their own logins. There is no kid-facing signup flow in the app.
- The parent provides consent. Before adding a child profile in the app, you confirm that you are the parent or legal guardian and agree to a COPPA notice that explains what data we collect about your child.
- What we collect about your child is minimal. Only their first name, an avatar emoji you pick, photos of their handwritten work (taken and uploaded by you), and the results of their spelling practice.
- You can review or delete your child's data at any time by emailing us at the address below. We will delete the account and all associated data within a reasonable timeframe.
- We do not show ads to children, and we do not share any data about children with third parties for advertising or marketing.
- Children cannot communicate with strangers through Spellexi. The app has no chat, no public profiles, and no social features.
Subscriptions and payments
Spellexi offers paid subscriptions purchased through Apple's In-App Purchase system. When you subscribe, Apple processes your payment. Spellexi never sees, receives, or stores your credit card or payment information. We only know whether your subscription is active and what plan you are on. To manage or cancel your subscription, go to Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions on your iPhone.
Data retention and deletion
We keep your account data as long as your account is active. If you cancel your subscription but keep the app installed, your account and progress remain so you can resume later. If you want your account and all associated data (yours and your child's) deleted, email us and we will process the deletion within a reasonable timeframe.
Your rights
You can ask us to delete your email from our waitlist, your account from the app, or your child's profile at any time by emailing us. If you are in the EU or California, you have additional rights under GDPR and CCPA respectively, including the right to access, correct, or delete your personal data. Contact us to exercise any of these rights.
Changes to this policy
If we make material changes to this policy, we will update the "Last updated" date above and, for significant changes, notify you by email or in-app.
